Construction Foreman
Job Brief
R.L. Friend Construction is a private civil engineering firm. The company is headquartered in Merced, CA. RLFC specializes in public and private construction projects working with wet and dry utilities as well as building water and wastewater treatment facilities. Our team is growing and looking for a job foreman. As the Underground Foreman you are responsible to recognize, assess and control potentially hazardous situations in addition to maintaining the safety of the crews by giving direction regarding procedures, road safety, trench safety and general oversight to help maximize productivity and efficiency. You will be working primarily with installation of dry and wet like utilities, power, conduit, sewer, water, substructures, and concrete.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise all operations and perform daily field inspections to ensure that all construction operations are completed in accordance with customer and industry specifications.
  • Provide on the job training for employees working under your direction on construction practices and methods to ensure a safe and productive work environment.
  • Assign daily production to in-house and subcontract laborers and crews.
  • Requisition, assign and track materials needed for the daily operations.
  • Resolve complaints with property owners in areas where our personnel are working.
  • Review daily production reports, material usage sheets, keep track of work hours, complete and maintain accurate “as-build maps” for areas built.
  • Coordinate daily tasks according to priorities and plans, adjusting as necessary due to weather, supply delivery, and personnel.
  • Review and approve employee time sheets.
  • Complete Daily field reports and job task analysis forms.
  • Conduct Safety meetings and provide feedback to management.
  • Mentor, manage and train employees.
  • Report project status to supervisors and officials regularly.
  • Supervise the layout, assembly, and installation of duct and vault systems.
  • Utilize heavy equipment and trucking to excavate, install, and complete projects.
  • Operate backhoes, loaders, excavators, asphalt rollers, and other heavy equipment with both CAT or DEERE controls.
  • Responsible for safe work environment and comply with state, federal, OSHA and VCI safety standards.
Requirements
  • Required: Minimum of 3 years overseeing the jobsite operations of a 5+ person crew.
  • Backhoe and horizontal drill experience around utilities.
  • Willingness to work shifts as assigned, including daily overtime when necessary.
  • Hard working, strong work ethic.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities and individual projects to the crew and contractors.
  • Strong organization, people, and time management skills.

This person is responsible for planning, directing, scheduling, and coordinating, key activities to support the bidding process and overall function of the office.

Construction Laborer
Job Brief

RLFC specializes in public and private construction projects working with wet and dry utilities as well as building water and wastewater treatment facilities. Our team is growing and looking for construction laborers. The Construction Laborer will perform tasks involving physical labor required for digging trenches, laying pipe, backfilling, heavy construction site prep, demolition, and site cleanup. Must be able to confidently use power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris and remove asbestos, lead and other hazardous waste materials.

Responsibilities
  • Operate jackhammers and drills to break‐up concrete and pavement.
  • Place, consolidate and protect cast in place or masonry structures.
  • Position, join, or align and seal structural components such as concrete wall sections and pipes.
  • Shovel cement and other materials in to portable cement mixers, add mix, pour and spread concrete.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment and materials
  • Smooth and finish freshly poured cement or concrete using floats trowels, screeds or power cement finishing tools.
  • Tend pumps, compressors and generators to provide power for tools, machinery and equipment or to heat and move materials such as asphalt.
  • Lubricate, clean and repair machinery, equipment and tools.
  • Operate, read and maintain air monitoring and other sampling devices in confined and/or hazardous environment.
  • Apply caulking compounds by hand or using caulking guns.
